Grantmakers are coming together to shift the culture of philanthropy from transactional to transformational.

By partnering with grantees to shape what we do and how we do it, we can best achieve our shared goals of social change.

In order to prioritize grantee inclusion in all aspects of our work, GEO’s Change Incubator gives grantmakers a space to ask tough questions, experiment with new ideas and build a habit of reflective practice.

We all know grantmaker-grantee communication is essential.

Research shows that grantmakers who are more connected to their grantees are more likely to provide the support that nonprofits need to be successful. And more effective solutions are shaped by building trust and tapping the knowledge and perspective of grantees and community members.

Grantmakers who are more attuned to nonprofit needs are

>5x

as likely to offer capacity-building support often or almost always

>2x

as likely to offer multiyear support often or almost always

But organizational issues can get in the way.

While GEO members understand an open approach, there are barriers that prevent us from building productive and authentic relationships with grantees.

Change Incubator Lessons Learned

While we learned a lot about grantee inclusion, we learned perhaps even more about change management and leadership. Here are five key lessons learned from our pilot program, along with examples from our participating foundations.
